These rating scales are designed to help you discover if your yin and yang are out of balance. For most people, the answer is yes — at least some of the time — so these scales help you identify in which direction you’ve fallen out of balance (are you lower in yin, or in yang?) and therefore what you should reinforce to regain your balance.

Mark the line between each pair of statements below, indicating which one you have experienced most often over the last three months. (Be sure to answer according to your current situation — without thinking about anything that “used to” be true for you. This is especially important if you are in menopause.) If neither of the statements apply to you (for example, it is a question about your period, and you no longer have a period), just leave that line unmarked. If you want to get a little fancy, you can make your mark closer to the center or closer to the end of the line depending on how frequent or intense these symptoms are for you. But all you really need to know is which side of center most often applies to you. If your marks cluster to the left of center, you have low yin — and the To Do List in Chapter 3, on yin deficiency, will be the most important one for you. If your marks cluster to the right of center, you have low yang — and Chapter 4, on yang deficiency, will be more your territory. Everyone will have marks on both sides of these scales — but one side will predominate. There are thirty-six items, so if you have nineteen or more marks on one side or the other, that’s the way in which you tend to fall out of balance. The more marks you have on one side, the more out of balance you are at the moment.
